There are two types of guards to prevent damage or injury to your teeth. Both appliances serve the same general function of protecting the teeth but are designed very differently.
Dr. Duffin may prescribe a night guard to patients who clench or grind their teeth during sleep or stressful times.
This guard is meant to be worn every night so it is made of harder more durable materials. It is also made thinner to be as comfortable as possible without the bulk. It’s designed to prevent the teeth from becoming worn down or fractured.
A sports guard is much bulkier. This guard is made to cover not only the teeth but the tissue in the mouth from injury while playing a sport. The material is typically softer to absorb an impact from physical contact.
