One of the specialty fields in dentistry is Endodontics. This is the area of dentistry where root canals fall into. A root canal can be needed if decay, infection, or injury have occurred.
Root canals have gotten a bad reputation but with the advancements in technology today, the experience is comparable to getting a new filling.
Similar to a filling, a root canal requires the removal of any decay or damage. The pulp and nerve are then removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned out and sealed. The final restoration may include a filling to fill in the hole, a post to secure the tooth, and/or a new crown for strength.
