For most of us metal or “silver” fillings were the norm. Todays fillings are a much better product in so many ways. They provide better bonding, support, and are much more esthetically pleasing. These “white” fillings are either porcelain or a composite resin. They are bonded directly to the tooth. The goal is to make it not obvious that a filling even exists. These tooth colored fillings do require a few additional minutes in the dental chair but for many patients the extra time is well worth it. They also require less removal of tooth when preparing the tooth for the filling than the silver ones do. Overall, a much better filling for every situation.
